A faint but amazingly green Perseid meteor whizzes across the night sky. Admin1 is reading Kolymsky Heights by Lionel Davidson (though Philip Pullman’s intro gets a bigger cover credit). Hardly great, despite Pullman’s endorsement, but very readable and interesting … but where was the proofreader? Admin2 is reading To the Top of the Mountain by Arne Dahl.

Corblimey

One of the sights at Unity Day was the Labour Party stall that invited passing punters to put balls in buckets to show support for the leadership candidates. Jeremy Corbyn’s got a lot more balls than any of the others. Admin2 was inspired to do this promotional poster with added amateurish scuzz.
Admin1 is reading Where Evil Lies by Jørgen Brekke, but gave it up after 100 pages — it would have been earlier, but the awfulness was oddly mesmerising. Admin2 is reading Whiskey Tango Foxtrot by David Shafer.

Spiders on Mars
Jul 17th 2015
A small spider casts a menacing shadow on a peeling painted door
Which reminded Admin1 of this:
…which is a HiRISE picture of Martian sand dunes.
Admin2 thinks it looks more like this:
…but the whole of Mars looks like it was painted by incompetent decorators and the paint has wrinkled, blistered, streaked, cracked or dripped.
Admin2 is reading All That Follows by Jim Crace, which like Amnesia and Orfeo was slipstreamy, set in the near future and concerned authoritarian responses to acts perceived as terrorism plus a lot of recapitulation of past events.

Storming On
Jul 7th 2015
Another day of thunder, lightning and heavy rain. We have had more rain this week than in the whole of June.
Also a nice day for a time-lapse. Here’s 6 hours in 3 minutes:
Admin2 is reading The Weeping Girl by Håkan Nesser. We are watching Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell. And it’s a bit late in the day to announce it, but we scored 7.5 in the Guardian Weekend quiz (and we also each scored 8/10, but with different wrong answers, in the aliens quiz).

Cloud of the Day: Vapour
Jun 27th 2015
Admins1&2 celebrated 14 years of joint administration by going to a very poorly publicised and signposted ecig expo in Harrogate, involving an inordinately long walk from the nearest bus stop, but we did blag some pens, a box mod and a lift back to the main road.
Admin2 is reading The Stranger’s Child by Alan Hollinghurst.

Critter of the Day: Chrysolina americana
Jun 22nd 2015
Rosemary beetle. Foreign insects in their fancy clothes coming over here infesting our herbs.
Admin1 is watching The Lord of the Rings. Admin2 is reading Exposed by Liza Marklund.
